Save the
Pie Shop Boulders

Pie Shop boulders and trail access are under an immediate development threat, with access to eight boulders and the main entrance trail proposed to be blocked by new residential development.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) is considering a proposal for a residential development on a parcel (APN 033-180-009, 1663 Sawmill Road) at the entrance to the main Pie Shop bouldering area. This parcel contains approximately eight documented boulders and an existing trail. Impacted boulders include: Hamburger Rock, Boulder U, Drilled Pockets, Orca, Frog, Fiber, and Powersauce. Approval of the project could result in the loss of a historic, heavily used local climbing area and set a concerning precedent for recreation access in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

The proposed development has undergone initial site assessments and planning review with the TRPA, and the TRPA is holding an online public hearing for the project on April 2, 2026.

Take Action

What you can do to take action against this proposed development:

  1. Submit written comments opposing the project to TRPA by April 1, 2026.

  2. Attend the online public hearing on April 2.

Written comments should be simple and personal. Briefly explain why the Pie Shop boulders and access trail matter to you and how you use the site. Conclude by asking the TRPA to pause all additional permit approvals and consider the significant recreational history and value of the site.
